Yup, the headline is true. I bought a 1997 Mitsubishi Montero LS with 220,000 miles. No need to fret, I still have the Wrangler and I don’t plan on getting rid of that anytime soon. There is much to be done, now back to talking about my sweet obscure Japanese off-roader. When I am bored I often browse Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace for any cheap fun project I can get my hands on and sure enough I found this beloved jewel. I got this thing for incredibly cheap, picked it up and two days later I put on $400 worth of rims and tires and thats about all that I am going to do it, its perfect. It looks like it should be roaming somewhere in the jungle of South America but alas it is here in New Mexico exploring parking lots. By perfect I mean a couple door handles are broken and looks as if the interior hadn’t been cleaned since 1997, but that all apart of the charm.
I am going to tell you I am starting to get confused as too why Jeeps are so expensive.. why buy a expensive overpriced Jeep or Toyota when you can buy a Montero with a factory locking rear diff for a fraction of the cost. This helps prove a point that you don’t need a flashy $30k tacoma or Jeep to go off-road and have fun. Yah there are things like no aftermarket support and parts are hard to come by, but at least you can be the only person on the trail with a 4000 pound unicorn. To me the uniqueness is worth it alone.
Now you may be asking is it capable and does it shred? why yes, yes it does, see the photos for yourself.
Now do I plan on keeping it? Thats the ultimate question, I have been wanting one for a few months and it is everything I have ever wanted to be but until something else catches my eye I shall keep it for now.
What should I name it? Comment Below.
